Practice Building

What is practice building?  It is a common question we get at KI as there are very few companies who really understand what it means to build a practice.  In essence practice building is the recognition that you, as a company, have a proficiency to do something better than it's typically done in the market place.  Notably it does not have to be your core competency, nor does it have to be inline with your business.  It is really understanding that you have a process or application that functions better than products that service that business function in the industry.

Why even think about building a practice out of something that is not in your core competency?  Are you in business to focus on your core competency? or are you in business to make money?

Product building is where the real money is made.  Why is that?  because it comes from a realization that you do something better than existing products.  It does not come from a need, want or desire, it comes from an already created ability.  Why is that significant?  Because it guarantees time to market, establishment as a first in a market place and a true underlying knowledge of the problem and solution set.  Many of the greatest products every built were not originally intended to be marketable products, but were created out of a basic business need and eventually someone realized the commercial viability of the product the implementation.
